Tips for Success for the best Chopped Ham and Cheese Sandwiches

  • Chop everything together on the same board so the flavors mix as you go, rather than mixing separately in a bowl.
  • Letting it sit in the fridge for the full hour makes a real difference — the flavors need time to meld.
  • Taste and adjust the salt, pepper, and vinegar before refrigerating, since the flavor mellows and blends as it sits.
  • Slice your bread ahead of time so it’s ready to load up straight from the fridge.

Serving Suggestions

  • Pile it high on sliced French bread for a classic chopped sandwich
  • Serve it as a scoopable dip with crackers or chips
  • Use it as a topping for a baked potato
  • Wrap it in a tortilla for a chopped sandwich wrap

Storing your leftover Chopped Ham and Cheese Sandwiches

Keep in an airtight, resealable container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Because it’s mayo-based, it’s best kept cold until you’re ready to serve.

Protein Options

The protein is completely up to you — this is where you can really make it your own:

  • Ham: The classic choice and a great starting point.
  • Turkey: A lighter, milder option that pairs well with any cheese.
  • Bacon: Adds a smoky, crispy crunch throughout the mix.
  • Chicken: Grilled or rotisserie chicken works great chopped in.
  • Combine a couple: Ham and turkey, or bacon and chicken, both work well if you want a mix.

Cheese Options

  • Provolone (a classic, mild melt)
  • American
  • Pepper jack (for some heat)
  • Try mixing two cheeses for extra flavor

Add-In Ideas to your Chopped Ham and Cheese Sandwiches

  • Banana peppers for tang
  • Go Italian style with salami, pepperoncini, and Italian dressing in place of some of the mayo
  • Sliced black olives
  • A pinch of Italian seasoning or oregano

Bread Options

  • French bread loaf from the bakery (Meijer’s is a favorite)
  • Any French bread loaf from your local grocery store
  • Leftover bread from Jimmy John’s works great too
  • Hoagie rolls or ciabatta if that’s what you have on hand
